iTunes and iTunes U, online services provided by Apple, will be fully accessible to blind customers at the end of this year. A new software program that uses Braille or speech functions to translate on-screen information will be installed by December 31, 2008 for iTunes U, and June 31, 2009 for iTunes and the iTunes Store. This agreement was reached in response to concerns voiced by the National Federation of the Blind, along with Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley. iTunes U provides educational materials, and the iTunes Store allows customers to download music, movies and videos from the web. Apple is also giving $250,000 to the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind in order to provide blind customers with assistive technology. In a recent related case, retailer Target Corp. settled a class action suit after agreeing to make its website accessible to the blind in National Federation of the Blind v. Target.
