Marketwatch.com reports that Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has partnered with California Assemblyman Mike Feuer in pursuit of legally requiring convicted drunk drivers to install alcohol ignition interlocks in their vehicles. The movement began with Assemblyman Feuer's 2008 AB2784, which proposes mandating the interlocks for convicted offenders. The Assembly Appropriations Committee amended the bill as an optional and discretionary measure, but MADD hopes legislators will pass the requirement into law. More than 310,971 drivers in California have three DUI convictions, and 44,210 have more than five. Research indicates that mandating the interlocks would reduce repeat offenses by as much as 64%. In 2007, 204,015 Californians were arrested for DUIs, yet only 6,000 interlocks are currently installed in the state.
