Man Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter in DUI Case

David Flaherty, 28, of Fairbanks entered a guilty plea in June to manslaughter charges after driving under the influence and causing a deadly accident, writes the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. Two years ago, Flaherty was driving a truck that rolled into a ditch, subsequently injuring him and killing his friend, Ian McCarthy.

Under the plea agreement, Flaherty has been ordered to serve more than seven years in prison, though his attorney claims he could be released early for good behavior. He will also be required to pay restitution to McCarthy's family.

Although Flaherty has no criminal record and has never been charged with a DUI in the past, state laws have become increasingly stringent to deter activities of drinking and driving.
