Under the allowances of the Wisconsin Direct Legislation Statute, a petition to impose 9 days of mandatory paid sick leave for employees in and around Milwaukee will be decided by citizens on November 4, 2008, reports Reinhartlaw.com. The proposed mandate will affect all private employers in the city, and was conceived by the National Association for Working Women. The association collected more than 40,000 signatures in support of the measure; a sufficient amount to allow the citizens to impose the local ordinance. Requirements of the statue allow proposed ordinances to be submitted to the Milwaukee Common Council if enough support is gained. The Council then may either choose to adopt the measures outright, or place them on the ballot for citizen vote.
