The Florida Attorney General's Office Announced that a settlement has been reached between Capital One and Hess Kennedy Companies that will relieve $1.825 million in consumer credit card debt due to fraudulent debt settlement services. Approximately 18,000 consumers nationwide and 1,900 Florida residents will receive restitution from funds acquired through the ordered liquidation of Hess Kennedy Companies.

Laura Hess and the Hess Kennedy Companies allegedly engaged in deceptive debt settlement activities, victimizing several customers. The lawsuit filed by the AG's Economic Crimes Division claims that Hess's law firm told consumers that it could settle their credit card debt for a fraction of what was owed. They were also falsly advised that they would not have to pay the creditors and that legal action would not be taken against them.
