Wisconsin Group Calls for More Stringent Drunk Driving Laws

The All-Wisconsin Alcohol Risk Education, a group led by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, is pursuing public awareness programs to lower the state's levels of alcohol abuse and impose tougher drunk driving laws, writes The New York Times. Currently, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health finds that Wisconsin residents are more likely to drive drunk than anywhere else in the country and that the state has the highest rate of drunk driving-related deaths. Surveys conducted over the last 10 years by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also find that Wisconsin leads the nation in binge drinking activity.

Wisconsin laws do not currently allow sobriety checkpoints, commonly used in other states, and felony charges are not imposed until after the 5th drunk driving offense. In addition, the state stands alone in allowing minors to consume alcohol with a parent's consent.
