If a police officer is injured while working out off duty and is cleared to come back light duty, is the work required to find and or look for light duty work for him?

Government employees and others represented by unions should check with their union representative about their rights under their union contract. From your short description, it sounds like this injury might be just a temporary one. Temporary injuries that have little or no permanent or long-term effects are not covered by the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). If a worker does have a long-term disability, however, the employer is required by the ADA to make reasonable accommodations, which could include finding light-duty work.
