Understanding Credit Scores

    What I don't understand is, when your credit score is so vital for major life decisions and they method for calculating is relatively secret, why individuals have to pay money to find out what it is. I've been told because it is a proprietary method of figuring it out. But that doesn't make sense. It seems to me that my credit score is just that - mine. And when it can have such dramatic effects on my financial life, why I have to pay to get.
