Colorado Property Owner Pleads Guilty to Cruelty to Animals

Jeffrey Scott Hawn, a software executive for a Seattle-based company, pled guilty to criminal mischief and cruelty to animals after killing 32 bison on his Colorado property, reports The New York Times. Authorities claim that Hawn organized an illegal hunt that resulted in the dead bison found in March of 2008. The single count of cruelty to animals stems from the fact that the animals were not harvested for food, and thus constituted the "needless killing of an animal."

Under the plea agreement, Hawn will pay $157,000 in total fines and restitution. $83,000 is the estimated value of the deceased bison and $70,000 will be donated to local animal welfare organizations.
