On September 10, 2008, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced that the debt-counselling firm AmeriDebt Inc. and DebtWorks Inc. and owner Andris Pukke returned nearly $12.7 million to consumers. Another $7 million will be returned to consumers involved in class-action settlements with the companies and related consumer credit counseling agencies. Read the Press Release
The Federal Trade Commission filed its lawsuit in 2003, against Germantown-based AmeriDebt Inc., one of the nation's largest credit counseling agencies and Andris Pukke, alleging a variety of deceptive practices. The founder of the credit counseling firm Andris Pukke also spent a month in prison in May of 2007 for contempt of court for the maneuvers. This was said to be the largest debt management deception case in the agency's history.
