Iowa Civil Rights Commission Discovers Few Discriminatory Housing Ads

The Sioux City Journal reports a new study from the Iowa Civil Right Commission has revealed that fewer than 1% of online and print housing ads discriminated against family status, race, sex or disability in 2008. Seventy-six of nearly 10,000 ads were found to be "possibly discriminatory," but upon further review only 40 were called "likely discriminatory."

Director Ralph Rosenburg stated that the ads in question typically favored singles, couples without children, and college students. Only one ad discrminated against sex, but four others may solicit prostitution. Those ads will be forwarded to the AG for further investigation.

In 2008, 56 race-related and 49 disability-related complaints were received by the state's commission. Approximately one-third of complaints ever received are settled without formal action.
