Mississippi to Halt Use of Traffic Cameras at Intersections

Governor Barbour has signed House Bill 1568 into law, which prohibits the use of traffic cameras that photograph and ticket drivers running red lights. The law still allows for dashboard cameras used in police cars and those placed at toll road stations.

Legislators drafted the bill after receiving several requests from residents to abolish the use of the traffic cameras placed at intersections throughout the state.  Six states have now banned or restricted their use, and 18 or more allow these "red-light" cameras.

Opponents of the new measure claim that the cameras deter drivers from running red lights, in effect reducing the number of accidents and lives lost due to driver negligence.
