Nashville Development Company Accused of Disability Discrimination

Murphy Development, LLC, is facing a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division for violating statutes of the Fair Housing Act specific to disability accessibility, reports Market Watch. The company operates seven Nashville housing communities, and allegedly has failed to construct walkway connections to covered units, as well as install door knobs that are easily used by persons with disabilities. In addition, the housing complexes have access routes that are too steep for persons using mobility devices, and dangerous stairways pose a threat to blind residents. The Justice Department is seeking civil penalties and compensation for victims, as well as a court order requiring the communities to modify the violations to become compliant.

The Civil Rights Division has filed 269 cases enforcing the Fair Housing Act since 2001, and 124 of these have alleged disability discrimination.
