Obama Lifts Stem Cell Research Funding Limits

Written by Jamie Simpson

President Obama has lifted restrictions on government-funded research using embryonic stem cells that have existed for the past eight years. This move will allow increased funding and research surrounding using the cells to treat diseases ranging from diabetes to paralysis cause by spinal cord injuries.

These embryonic stem cells are able to become any type of body cell, and scientists hope they may be able to regenerate nerve connections, help Parkinson's patients, and create insulin-producing cells.

However, the methods used to harvest these cells have created controversy. Embryos must be destroyed to obtain the stem cells, typically from fertility clinic overflow; scientists claimed the viability of these older lines of embryos had only limited use.

President George W. Bush formerly limited taxpayer funds to research only stem cells created before August 9, 2001. Now, research companies will have the option to apply for government funding versus relying totally on private financing.
