Texas Family Sues ADT for Medical Alert Malfunction
Last Updated June 25, 2009

A Texas family recently sued medical alert and home security provider ADT after the company's home medical alert system allegedly failed and lead to the death of an elderly parent. Bill Stern had an ADT home medical alert system installed in his home, but on May 14, 2007, it stopped functioning.  Although an ADT repairman worked on the unit the same day, the necessary repairs were not performed, according to the suit.  On May 17, Bill Stern died due to heart complications, with the medical alert bracelet around his wrist. An ADT repairman visited the next day to repair the unit, but too late to make any difference for Mr. Stern.

The case was originally filed in the 160th Judicial District Court of Dallas County, Case No. 09-05794 but was removed to federal court on May 29, 2009.  It is now pendng in the U.S. District Court for the Norther District of Texas, 3:09-cv-00998-M, before Judge Barbara Lynn.  ADT has denied the suit's allegations.
