Abstract of judgment: In a federal criminal proceeding, A certification from a U.S. District Court clerk that a judgment of restitution was entered against the defendant owing to the victim. If the defendant inherits, owns, or sells real property or holdings, these assets can then be attached at the state and local levels as well.
Access costs: means living expenses and expenses for transportation, supplies, technology, and books. See California Education Code 69432.7
Accredited: as used in this chapter , means a school, college, or university accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education or a regional or national institutional accrediting agency that is recognized by the United States Department of Education. See California Business and Professions Code 4980.03
Acquittal:
1. Judgement that a criminal defendant has not been proved guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
2. A verdict of "not guilty."
Act: means the California School Finance Authority Act. See California Education Code 17173
Acupuncture: means the stimulation of a certain point or points on or near the surface of the body by the insertion of needles to prevent or modify the perception of pain or to normalize physiological functions, including pain control for the treatment of certain diseases or dysfunctions of the body, and includes the techniques of electroacupuncture, cupping, and moxibustion. See California Business and Professions Code 4927
Acupuncture assistant: means a person who, without a license, may perform basic supportive acupuncture procedures under the supervision and order of an acupuncturist. See California Business and Professions Code 4927
Acupuncturist: means an individual to whom a license has been issued to practice acupuncture pursuant to this chapter, which is in effect and is not suspended or revoked. See California Business and Professions Code 4927
Admissions data: means information from the most recently enrolled fall semester class including the total number of applications, the total number of accepted students, and the 75th, 50th, and 25th percentile scores for the undergraduate grade point averages and law school admission test scores of admitted students. See California Education Code 67102
Advertise: as used in this chapter , includes, but is not limited to, any public communication, as defined in subdivision (a) of Section 651, the issuance of any card, sign, or device to any person, or the causing, permitting, or allowing of any sign or marking on, or in, any building or structure, or in any newspaper or magazine or in any directory, or any printed matter whatsoever, with or without any limiting qualification. See California Business and Professions Code 4980.03
Advertising: as used in this chapter , includes, but is not limited to, any public communication as defined in subdivision (a) of Section 651, the issuance of any card, sign, or device to any person, or the causing, permitting, or allowing of any sign or marking on, or in, any building or structure, or in any newspaper, magazine, or directory, or any printed matter whatsoever, with or without any limiting qualification. Advisory Council: means the Dispute Resolution Advisory Council. See California Business and Professions Code 466
Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
Affirmed: In the practice of the appellate courts, the decree or order is declared valid and will stand as rendered in the lower court.
agency: means every state office, officer, department, division, bureau, board, commission, or other state agency, except that the term agency shall not include:

Agent: means a county or city board of education or superintendent of schools acting with the board's consent, on behalf of one or more school districts for any purpose of this chapter, the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges or the Chancellor of the California Community Colleges acting with the Board of Governors' consent, on behalf of one or more community college districts for any purpose of this chapter, and the school district, county office of education, or other chartering entity acting with the consent of, and on behalf of, one or more charter schools for any purpose of this chapter. agreement: means the total legal obligation that results from the parties' agreement as determined by this code and as supplemented by any other applicable laws. See California Commercial Code 1201
Agreement: means an agreement relating to commercial cannabis authorized under this chapter and entered into between this state and another state or states. See California Business and Professions Code 26300
Aide: means an individual who provides supportive services to an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant and who is trained by an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant to perform, under appropriate supervision, delegated, selected client and nonclient-related tasks for which the aide has demonstrated competency. See California Business and Professions Code 2570.2
Allegation: something that someone says happened.
alternative certification program: is a program operated by a school district, county office of education, college or university, or other public education entity, individually or in collaboration with other public education entities in the region to be served, and designed to provide a concentrated program leading to a permanent teaching credential. See California Education Code 44381
Amortization: Paying off a loan by regular installments.
Any school district: means a school district or a county superintendent of schools who employs classroom teachers in the public schools. See California Education Code 45343
Appellate: About appeals; an appellate court has the power to review the judgement of another lower court or tribunal.
Applicant: means a community college district, a campus of the California State University, a campus of the University of California, which may include the college named in Section 92200, or a partnership of campuses across and within the public higher education segments. See California Education Code 17200
Applicant for licensure: as used in this chapter , means an unlicensed person who has completed the required education and required hours of supervised experience for licensure. See California Business and Professions Code 4980.03
application: includes the original documents or writings filed and any other supporting documents or writings including supporting documents provided or filed contemporaneously, or later, in support of the application whether provided or filed by the applicant or by any other person in support of the application. See California Business and Professions Code 478
Appraisal: A determination of property value.
Approved: as used in this chapter , means a school, college, or university that possessed unconditional approval by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education at the time of the applicant's graduation from the school, college, or university. See California Business and Professions Code 4980.03
Approved program: means a program for the education of physician assistants that has been formally approved by the board. See California Business and Professions Code 3501
area median income: means the median family income of a geographic area of the state, as annually estimated by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development pursuant to Section 8 of the United States Housing Act of 1937. See California Health and Safety Code 50093
Armed forces: means the United States Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Space Force, or Coast Guard. See California Education Code 45294
Armed forces: means the United States Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Space Force, or Coast Guard. See California Education Code 88113
Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
assessed value: means 25 percent of full value to, and including, the 1980-81 fiscal year, and 100 percent of full value for the 1981-82 fiscal year and fiscal years thereafter. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 26
assessment: as used in this chapter , shall have the same meaning as the term "evaluation" in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, as provided in Section 1414 of Title 20 of the United States Code. See California Education Code 56302.5
Asset: means property of a debtor, but the term does not include the following:

Associate: as used in this chapter , means an unlicensed person who has earned a master's or doctoral degree qualifying the person for licensure and is registered with the board as an associate. See California Business and Professions Code 4980.03
Associate: when used with respect to a licensee, means all of the following:

Association: means any corporation organized under this part. See California Corporations Code 13202
Association: means the Occupational Therapy Association of California or a similarly constituted organization representing occupational therapists in this state. See California Business and Professions Code 2570.2
Attorney-in-fact: A person who, acting as an agent, is given written authorization by another person to transact business for him (her) out of court.
Authority: means the California School Finance Authority, or any board, body, commission, department, or officer succeeding to the principal functions of the authority, or to which the powers conferred upon the authority by this chapter shall be given by law. See California Education Code 17173
Authority: means the California Educational Facilities Authority created by this chapter or any board, body, commission, department, or officer succeeding to the principal functions of the authority or to whom the power conferred upon the authority by this chapter is given by law. See California Education Code 94110
Award year: means one academic year, or the equivalent, of attendance at a qualifying institution. See California Education Code 69432.7
axle: is a structure or portion of a structure consisting of one or more shafts, spindles, or bearings in the same vertical transverse plane by means of which, in conjunction with wheels mounted on said shafts, spindles, or bearings, a portion of the weight of a vehicle and its load, if any, is continuously transmitted to the roadway when the vehicle is in motion. See California Vehicle Code 230
Bail: Security given for the release of a criminal defendant or witness from legal custody (usually in the form of money) to secure his/her appearance on the day and time appointed.
Bank: means a person engaged in the business of banking, and includes a savings bank, savings and loan association, credit union, and trust company. See California Commercial Code 1201
Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings.
Bar passage data: means the most current cumulative bar pass rates defined and reported by the examining committee of the State Bar. See California Education Code 67102
Basal area per acre: means the sum of the cross-sectional areas at breast height of the tree stems of commercial species per acre. See California Public Resources Code 4528
Baseline: Projection of the receipts, outlays, and other budget amounts that would ensue in the future without any change in existing policy. Baseline projections are used to gauge the extent to which proposed legislation, if enacted into law, would alter current spending and revenue levels.
Basic supportive acupuncture service: means any of the following:

Benefit corporation: means a corporation organized under the General Corporation Law that has elected to become subject to this part and whose status as a benefit corporation has not been terminated as provided in this part. See California Corporations Code 14601

board: means the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians of the State of California. See California Business and Professions Code 4501
board: means any entity listed in Section 101, the entities referred to in Sections 1000 and 3600, the State Bar, the Department of Real Estate, and any other state agency that issues a license, certificate, or registration authorizing a person to engage in a business or profession. Board: means the Veterinary Medical Board. See California Business and Professions Code 4810
Board: means the State Public Works Board. See California Education Code 67352

board: refers to any healing arts board, division, or examining committee which licenses or certifies health professionals. See California Business and Professions Code 701
Board: means the Physician Assistant Board. See California Business and Professions Code 3501

Board of Governors: means the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges. See California Education Code 52651
Bond: means bonds, notes, debentures, securities, or other evidences of indebtedness of the authority issued pursuant to this chapter. See California Education Code 94110
bookkeeping services: means keeping books, making trial balances, preparing statements, making audits, or preparing reports, all as a part of bookkeeping operations, provided that such trial balances, statements, or reports are not issued over the name of such person as having been prepared or examined by a certified public accountant or public accountant. See California Civil Code 1799
Budget authority: Authority provided by law to enter into obligations that will result in outlays of Federal funds. Budget authority may be classified by the period of availability (one-year, multiyear, no-year), by the timing of congressional action (current or permanent), or by the manner of determining the amount available (definite or indefinite).
bus: is a ny vehicle, including a trailer bus, designed, used, or maintained for carrying more than 15 persons including the driver. See California Vehicle Code 233
business: includes a proprietorship, partnership, corporation, and any other form of commercial enterprise. See California Vehicle Code 234
business entity: means a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, association or other group, however organized and whether or not organized to operate at a profit, but does not mean a financial institution organized, chartered, or holding a license or authorization certificate under a law of this state or the United States to make loans or extend credit and subject to supervision by an official or agency of this state or the United States, nor the parent of any such financial institution, nor any subsidiary of any such financial institution or parent. Campus: means a community college district, a campus of the California State University, or a campus of the University of California, which may include the college named in Section 92200. See California Education Code 17200
Campus-recognized sorority or fraternity: means a sorority or fraternity that has officially met the formal chartering and recognition requirements at the institution where it operates. See California Education Code 66312
candidate: includes any officeholder who is subject to a recall election. See California Elections Code 305
Capacity expansion projects: means projects that expand the ability of a four-year public postsecondary educational institution to support future California resident enrollment growth. See California Education Code 17200
Capitalized operating subsidy reserve: means funds that are set aside before a property is acquired pursuant to this chapter to cover the property's operating expenses over time. See California Health and Safety Code 50720.4
Case law: The law as laid down in cases that have been decided in the decisions of the courts.
Caucus: From the Algonquian Indian language, a caucus meant "to meet together." An informal organization of members of the legislature that exists to discuss issues of mutual concern and possibly to perform legislative research and policy planning for its members. There are regional, political or ideological, ethnic, and economic-based caucuses.
Certificate: means a valid certificate issued by the council pursuant to this chapter. See California Business and Professions Code 4601
Chambers: A judge's office.
Chancellor: means the Chancellor of the California Community Colleges. See California Education Code 52651
Chapter house: means any residence located on or off campus that is owned by the institution of higher education but occupied by a campus-recognized sorority or fraternity, or any residence located on or off campus that is owned and occupied by the campus-recognized sorority or fraternity. See California Education Code 66312
Charter school: means a school established pursuant to Part 26. See California Education Code 17173
City: includes every city and city and county within this State. See California Vehicle Code 255
City: includes city and county. See California Business and Professions Code 18
claim for relief: means a right to payment, whether or not the right is reduced to judgment, liquidated, unliquidated, fixed, contingent, matured, unmatured, disputed, undisputed, legal, equitable, secured, or unsecured. See California Civil Code 3439.01
Classification: means that each position in the classified service shall have a designated title, a regular minimum number of assigned hours per day, days per week, and months per year, a specific statement of the duties required to be performed by the employees in each such position, and the regular monthly salary ranges for each such position. Client centered advocacy: as used in this chapter , includes, but is not limited to, researching, identifying, and accessing resources, or other activities, related to obtaining or providing services and supports for clients or groups of clients receiving psychotherapy or counseling services. Close relative: means ancestor, lineal descendant, brother or sister and lineal descendants of either, spouse, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, brother-in-law, daughter-in-law, or sister-in-law. See California Corporations Code 28820
Codicil: An addition, change, or supplement to a will executed with the same formalities required for the will itself.
Cohort population: means the number of students that began a program on a cohort start date. See California Education Code 94928
Cohort start date: means the first class day after the cancellation period during which a cohort of students attends class for a specific program. See California Education Code 94928
commercial vehicle: is a motor vehicle of a type required to be registered under this code used or maintained for the transportation of persons for hire, compensation, or profit or designed, used, or maintained primarily for the transportation of property. See California Vehicle Code 260
commission: means the Student Aid Commission created by this article. See California Education Code 69515
Commission: means the Student Aid Commission. See California Education Code 69432.7
Committee: means the Higher Education Facilities Finance Committee, created pursuant to Section 67353. See California Education Code 67352
Committee: means a diversion evaluation committee created by this article. See California Business and Professions Code 1695.1

Committee membership: Legislators are assigned to specific committees by their party. Seniority, regional balance, and political philosophy are the most prominent factors in the committee assignment process.
Common board: as used in this article means a board with identical members that governs more than one school district. See California Education Code 45220
Common law: The legal system that originated in England and is now in use in the United States. It is based on judicial decisions rather than legislative action.
Community-based organizations: means public nonprofit benefit corporations of demonstrated effectiveness approved by the superintendent to provide educational services to eligible legalized persons. See California Education Code 52651
Compensation: means a payment, loan, advance, donation, contribution, deposit, or gift of money, or anything of value. See California Business and Professions Code 4601
compliance audit: means an audit that ascertains and verifies whether or not funds provided through apportionment, contract, or grant, either federal or state, have been properly disbursed and expended as required by law or regulation or both and includes the verification of each of the following:

Consolidated plan: means the five-year action plan that results from the process set by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that assesses affordable housing and community development needs and market conditions, allows the prioritization of development needs, and makes data-driven, place-based investment decisions for federal funding provided by HUD. Consumer: means any individual who seeks or acquires, by purchase or lease, any goods, services, money, or credit for personal, family, or household purposes. See California Business and Professions Code 302
Continuing competence: means a dynamic and multidimensional process in which the occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant develops and maintains the knowledge, performance skills, interpersonal abilities, critical reasoning, and ethical reasoning skills necessary to perform current and future roles and responsibilities within the profession. See California Business and Professions Code 2570.2
contract: means the bargain of the parties in fact, as found in their language or inferred from other circumstances, including course of performance, course of dealing, or usage of trade as provided in Section 1303. See California Commercial Code 1201
Contract for sale of real property: means an agreement wherein one party agrees to convey title to real property to another party upon the satisfaction of specified conditions set forth in the contract and which requires conveyance of title within one year from the date of formation of the contract, whether designated in the agreement a "contract for sale of real property" "land sale contract" "deposit receipt" "agreement for sale" "agreement to convey" or otherwise. Contracting state: means a state of the United States, including a district, commonwealth, territory, or possession subject to the legislative authority of the United States, with which the Governor has entered into an agreement pursuant to this chapter. Contractor: means any person who is a general building contractor within the meaning of §. See California Civil Code 1797.1
Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.

driver: is a person who drives or is in actual physical control of a vehicle. See California Vehicle Code 305
drug: means any substance or combination of substances, other than alcohol, which could so affect the nervous system, brain, or muscles of a person as to impair, to an appreciable degree, his ability to drive a vehicle in the manner that an ordinarily prudent and cautious man, in full possession of his faculties, using reasonable care, would drive a similar vehicle under like conditions. Dwelling unit: includes a space in a mobilehome park, as defined in Section 18214, and includes a mobilehome rented with the space. See California Health and Safety Code 50775

Educational facility: means any property, facility, structure, equipment, or furnishings used or operated in conjunction with one or more public schools, including charter schools, or community colleges, including, but not limited to, all of the following:

Electronic funds transfer: The transfer of money between accounts by consumer electronic systems-such as automated teller machines (ATMs) and electronic payment of bills-rather than by check or cash. Electronic transmission to the corporation: means a communication (a) delivered by (1) facsimile telecommunication or electronic mail when directed to the facsimile number or electronic mail address, respectively, which the corporation has provided from time to time to shareholders or members and directors for sending communications to the corporation, (2) posting on an electronic message board or network which the corporation has designated for those communications, and which transmission shall be validly delivered upon the posting, or (3) other means of electronic communication, (b) as to which the corporation has placed in effect reasonable measures to verify that the sender is the shareholder or member (in person or by proxy) or director purporting to send the transmission, and (c) that creates a record that is capable of retention, retrieval, and review, and that may thereafter be rendered into clearly legible tangible form. Emergency shelter: means housing with minimal supportive services for homeless persons that is limited to occupancy of six months or less by a homeless person. See California Health and Safety Code 50801
Employment outcomes for graduates: means the results of a survey by the law school, taken three years after graduation, that breaks down the employment rate of graduates in each of the first three years after graduation, including the rate of employment of graduates in jobs where a juris doctor degree is required by the employer and the rate of employment of graduates in jobs where a juris doctor degree is an advantage in employment. Enrollment data: means information about the number of students who are admitted to the school per class per year for the past three years, the number of students who transfer to and from the school per class per year for the past three years, and the number of students who do not continue to attend the school each year for the past three years on either a voluntary or involuntary basis. Escrow: Money given to a third party to be held for payment until certain conditions are met.
establishment: means a fixed location where massage is performed for compensation, excluding those locations where massage is only provided on an out-call basis. See California Business and Professions Code 4601
Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
Ex officio: Literally, by virtue of one's office.
Examination: means an entry level examination for occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy or by another nationally recognized credentialing body. See California Business and Professions Code 2570.2
executed: when used with respect to the documents filed pursuant to this code or pursuant to regulations adopted under this code, and presented to the Secretary of State, include a document bearing a signature under subdivision (a). See California Corporations Code 17.1

Extradition: The formal process of delivering an accused or convicted person from authorities in one state to authorities in another state.
Facilitating: includes , but is not limited to, the act of allowing the offeror of the residential unit to offer or advertise the residential unit on the Internet Web site provided or maintained by the operator. See California Business and Professions Code 22590
Faculty and staff housing: means a residential unit owned by a participating college or participating nonprofit entity for use by an individual holding a faculty appointment or a staff position at a public university, public college, or participating college. See California Education Code 94110
Fair market value: The price at which an asset would change hands in a transaction between a willing, informed buyer and a willing, informed seller.
farm labor vehicle: is a ny motor vehicle designed, used, or maintained for the transportation of nine or more farmworkers, in addition to the driver, to or from a place of employment or employment-related activities. See California Vehicle Code 322

Interest rate: The amount paid by a borrower to a lender in exchange for the use of the lender's money for a certain period of time. Plaintiff: The person who files the complaint in a civil lawsuit.
Plea: In a criminal case, the defendant's statement pleading "guilty" or "not guilty" in answer to the charges, a declaration made in open court.
Pleadings: Written statements of the parties in a civil case of their positions. In the federal courts, the principal pleadings are the complaint and the answer.
Power of attorney: A written instrument which authorizes one person to act as another's agent or attorney. The power of attorney may be for a definite, specific act, or it may be general in nature. The terms of the written power of attorney may specify when it will expire. If not, the power of attorney usually expires when the person granting it dies. ^{Source: OCC}
Power of termination: includes the power created in a transferee to terminate a fee simple estate in real property to enforce a restriction on the use of the real property in the form of a limitation or condition subsequent to which the fee simple estate is subject, whether the power is characterized in the instrument that creates or evidences it as an executory interest, executory limitation, or otherwise, and includes the interest known at common law as an executory interest preceded by a fee simple determinable. Practice agreement: means the writing, developed through collaboration among one or more physicians and surgeons and one or more physician assistants, that defines the medical services the physician assistant is authorized to perform pursuant to Section 3502 and that grants approval for physicians and surgeons on the staff of an organized health care system to supervise one or more physician assistants in the organized health care system. See California Business and Professions Code 3501
Precedent: A court decision in an earlier case with facts and law similar to a dispute currently before a court. Precedent will ordinarily govern the decision of a later similar case, unless a party can show that it was wrongly decided or that it differed in some significant way.
Predevelopment loan: means a loan for required expenses, other than administrative and construction, that are incurred by eligible sponsors in the process of, and prior to, securing long-term financing for construction, conversion, preservation, or rehabilitation of assisted housing, and that are recoverable once long-term financing is obtained. Preforeclosure intervention sale: means a sale of a 1 to 25 unit residential real property that is subject to a recorded notice of default by a trustee representing a beneficiary at the time of the sale. See California Health and Safety Code 50720.4
Preliminary hearing: A hearing where the judge decides whether there is enough evidence to make the defendant have a trial.
prepare: means to put into condition for intended use. See California Education Code 66405

Probable cause: A reasonable ground for belief that the offender violated a specific law.
Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.
Probation officers: Screen applicants for pretrial release and monitor convicted offenders released under court supervision.
Process: signifies a writ or summons issued in the course of a judicial proceeding. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17
Program: means the State Community Development Block Grant Program created pursuant to federal law (42 U. See California Health and Safety Code 50826
Program: means an entity that provides dispute resolution. See California Business and Professions Code 466

Property acquisition costs: means direct real property acquisition costs such as payment of the purchase price and any liens on eligible properties in addition to repairs required to ensure a property and its structures are in compliance with all applicable habitability, health, and safety laws. Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.
psychiatric technician: means any person who, for compensation or personal profit, implements procedures and techniques that involve understanding of cause and effect and that are used in the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of mentally ill or emotionally disturbed persons, or persons with intellectual disabilities, and who has one or more of the following:

registered owner: is a person registered by the department as the owner of a vehicle. See California Vehicle Code 505
Regulations: means the rules and regulations set forth in Division 20 (commencing with Section 2000) of Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations. See California Business and Professions Code 4810
Regulations: means the rules and regulations as set forth in Division 13. See California Business and Professions Code 3501
regulatory agency: means the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation, the Department of Insurance, the Bureau of Real Estate, and agencies of the United States or of any other state responsible for regulating financial institutions. See California Civil Code 1798.3
related services: means transportation, and such developmental, corrective, and other supportive services (including speech-language pathology and audiology services, interpreting services, psychological services, physical and occupational therapy, recreation, including therapeutic recreation, social work services, school nurse services designed to enable an individual with exceptional needs to receive a free appropriate public education as described in the individualized education program of the child, counseling services, including rehabilitation counseling, orientation, and mobility services, and medical services, except that such medical services shall be for diagnostic and evaluation purposes only) as may be required to assist an individual with exceptional needs to benefit from special education, and includes the early identification and assessment of disabling conditions in children. Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.

Rescission: The cancellation of budget authority previously provided by Congress. The Impoundment Control Act of 1974 specifies that the President may propose to Congress that funds be rescinded. If both Houses have not approved a rescission proposal (by passing legislation) within 45 days of continuous session, any funds being withheld must be made available for obligation.
Respondent: means the party against whom a petition has been filed. See California Education Code 44990
Restitution: The court-ordered payment of money by the defendant to the victim for damages caused by the criminal action.

traffic: includes pedestrians, ridden animals, vehicles, street cars, and other conveyances, either singly or together, while using any highway for purposes of travel. See California Vehicle Code 620
trailer: includes a semitrailer when used in conjunction with an auxiliary dolly, if the auxiliary dolly is of a type constructed to replace the function of the drawbar and the front axle or axles of a trailer. See California Vehicle Code 630
Trainee: as used in this chapter , means an unlicensed person who is currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program, as specified in Sections 4980. See California Business and Professions Code 4980.03
Transaction costs: means costs related to acquiring a property, which may include property appraisal, transfer taxes, financing costs, underwriting, project management, broker fees, and legal fees. See California Health and Safety Code 50720.4
Transcript: A written, word-for-word record of what was said, either in a proceeding such as a trial or during some other conversation, as in a transcript of a hearing or oral deposition.
Transfer: means every mode, direct or indirect, absolute or conditional, voluntary or involuntary, of disposing of or parting with an asset or an interest in an asset, and includes payment of money, release, lease, license, and creation of a lien or other encumbrance. truck tractor: is a motor vehicle designed and used primarily for drawing other vehicles and not so constructed as to carry a load, other than a part of the weight of the vehicle and the load so drawn. See California Vehicle Code 655
Trustor: The person who makes or creates a trust. Also known as the grantor or settlor.
Truth in Lending Act: The Truth in Lending Act is a federal law that requires lenders to provide standardized information so that borrowers can compare loan terms. In general, lenders must provide information on ^{Source: OCC}

Ultraviolet tanning device: means equipment that emits electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths in the air between 200 and 400 nanometers used for tanning of the skin, including, but not limited to, a sunlamp, tanning booth, or tanning bed. See California Business and Professions Code 22702
Ungranted tidelands: means the tide and submerged lands owned by the State of California which have not been granted in trust to any local agency or to the United States or to private parties. See California Public Resources Code 6331
Uniform Commercial Code: A set of statutes enacted by the various states to provide consistency among the states' commercial laws. It includes negotiable instruments, sales, stock transfers, trust and warehouse receipts, and bills of lading. ^{Source: OCC}
United States: means the United States of America, and in relation to any particular matter includes the officers, agents, employees, agencies, or instrumentalities authorized to act in relation thereto. See California Water Code 20
Uphold: The decision of an appellate court not to reverse a lower court decision.
User fees: Fees charged to users of goods or services provided by the government. In levying or authorizing these fees, the legislature determines whether the revenue should go into the treasury or should be available to the agency providing the goods or services.
Usury: Charging an illegally high interest rate on a loan. ^{Source: OCC}
vanpool vehicle: is a ny motor vehicle, other than a motortruck or truck tractor, designed for carrying more than 10 but not more than 15 persons including the driver, which is maintained and used primarily for the nonprofit work-related transportation of adults for the purposes of ridesharing. See California Vehicle Code 668
vehicle: is a device by which any person or property may be propelled, moved, or drawn upon a highway, excepting a device moved exclusively by human power or used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks. See California Vehicle Code 670
Vehicle manufacturer: is a ny person who produces from raw materials or new basic components a vehicle of a type subject to registration under this code, off-highway motorcycles or all-terrain vehicles subject to identification under this code, or trailers subject to identification pursuant to Section 5014. See California Vehicle Code 672
Verdict: The decision of a petit jury or a judge.
Veteran: as used in this article means any person who has served in the United States armed forces in time of war, or national emergency declared by the President of the United States of America, and who has been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable, proof of which shall be submitted to the commission at the time of the examination. See California Education Code 45294

Working capital: means funds to be used by, or on behalf of, a participating party to pay maintenance or operating expenses, or any other costs that would be treated as an expense item under generally accepted accounting principles in connection with the ownership or operation of an educational facility, including, but not limited to, all of the following:

youth bus: is a ny bus, other than a schoolbus, designed for and when actually carrying not more than 16 persons and the driver, used to transport children at or below the 12th-grade level directly from a public or private school to an organized nonschool-related youth activity within 25 miles of the school or directly from a location which provides the organized nonschool-related youth activity to a public or private school within 25 miles of that location.
