• Allegation: something that someone says happened.
• Antioch Bridge: means the high-level fixed-span bridge across the San Joaquin River near Antioch together with the approaches thereto and the toll collection facilities for the bridge. See California Streets and Highways Code 30760
• Appraisal: A determination of property value.
• Approaches: means all facilities between the terminus in Alameda County and the first station thereafter in the county for the discharge of passengers, and all facilities between the terminus in the City and County of San Francisco and the easterly end of the passenger platform of the Montgomery Street Station defined as "approaches" in the agreement between the department and the district, dated March 3, 1966. • Authority: means the Bay Area Toll Authority created pursuant to Chapter 4. See California Streets and Highways Code 30600
• Benicia-Martinez Bridge: means the toll bridge across the Carquinez Straits on Interstate Route 680 connecting the Cities of Benicia and Martinez, together with any existing or new and additional approaches thereto, necessary or desirable with respect to the present span or any spans and toll collection facilities for the bridge and any additional spans. • Carquinez Bridge: means those certain bridge spans on Interstate Route 80 across the Carquinez Straits near Crockett, together with any existing or new and additional approaches thereto, necessary or desirable to connect with the present spans or any additional spans and the toll collection facilities to serve both the existing bridge span and any additional spans. See California Streets and Highways Code 30750
• City: includes "city and county" and "incorporated town. See California Streets and Highways Code 15
• City: includes incorporated city, city and county, municipal corporation, municipality, town and incorporated town. See California Unemployment Insurance Code 13
• Classification: means that each position in the classified service shall have a designated title, a regular minimum number of assigned hours per day, days per week, and months per year, a specific statement of the duties required to be performed by the employees in each such position, and the regular monthly salary ranges for each such position. See California Education Code 45101
• commission: means the California Transportation Commission. See California Streets and Highways Code 22

• custody: means the legal right to custody of the child unless that right is held jointly by two or more persons, in which case "custody" means the physical custody of the child by one of the persons sharing the right to custody. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 17.1
• Department: means the Department of Transportation of this state. See California Streets and Highways Code 20
• Devisee: means any person designated in a will to receive a devise. See California Probate Code 34
• Disciplinary action: includes any action whereby an employee is deprived of any classification or any incident of any classification in which he has permanence, including dismissal, suspension, demotion, or any reassignment, without his voluntary consent, except a layoff for lack of work or lack of funds. See California Education Code 45101
• District: means the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District. See California Streets and Highways Code 30771
• Heir: means any person, including the surviving spouse, who is entitled to take property of the decedent by intestate succession under this code. See California Probate Code 44
• highway: includes bridges, culverts, curbs, drains, and all works incidental to highway construction, improvement, and maintenance. See California Streets and Highways Code 23
• Instrument: means a will, a document establishing or modifying a trust, a deed, or any other writing that designates a beneficiary or makes a donative transfer of property. See California Probate Code 45
• maintenance: includes any of the following:

• permanent employee: includes tenure in the classification in which the employee passed the required probationary period, and includes all of the incidents of that classification. See California Education Code 45101
• Personal representative: means executor, administrator, administrator with the will annexed, special administrator, successor personal representative, public administrator acting pursuant to Section 7660, or a person who performs substantially the same function under the law of another jurisdiction governing the person's status. See California Probate Code 58
• Probation officers: Screen applicants for pretrial release and monitor convicted offenders released under court supervision.
• Public law: A public bill or joint resolution that has passed both chambers and been enacted into law. Public laws have general applicability nationwide.
• Rapid transit tube: means a subaqueous tube across San Francisco Bay between the City and County of San Francisco and the County of Alameda, its approaches and fixed transit facilities, including, but not limited to, ventilation towers and equipment, tracks, and electrical distribution, control, lighting, and communication systems for the accommodation of rail rapid transit. • Real property: includes a leasehold interest in real property. See California Probate Code 68
• Revocable trust: A trust agreement that can be canceled, rescinded, revoked, or repealed by the grantor (person who establishes the trust).
• Spouse: includes "registered domestic partner" as required by §. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 12.2
• Spouse: includes domestic partner, as defined in Section 37 of this code, as required by §. See California Probate Code 72
• State: includes any state of the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and any territory or possession subject to the legislative authority of the United States. See California Probate Code 74

• Testate: To die leaving a will.
• Toll bridge: means that certain bridge across San Francisco Bay known as the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and the approaches thereto. See California Streets and Highways Code 30600
• toll bridge: means a toll bridge, with at least four lanes, across Los Angeles Harbor from San Pedro at or near Boschke Slough to Terminal Island, and the approaches thereto. See California Streets and Highways Code 30680
• Transferee: means the beneficiary, donee, or other recipient of an interest transferred by an instrument. See California Probate Code 81.5
