Current as of: 2009 1. The university of Iowa hospitals and clinics authorities may at their discretion receive patients into the hospital for medical, obstetrical, or surgical treatment or hospital care. The university of Iowa hospitals and clinics ambulances and ambulance personnel may be used for the transportation of such patients at a reasonable charge if specialized equipment is required. 2. The university of Iowa hospitals and clinics authorities shall collect from the person or persons liable for support of such patients reasonable charges for hospital care and service and deposit payment of the charges with the treasurer of the university for the use and benefit of the university of Iowa hospitals and clinics. 3. Earnings of the university of Iowa hospitals and clinics shall be administered so as to increase, to the greatest extent possible, the services available for patients, including acquisition, construction, reconstruction, completion, equipment, improvement, repair, and remodeling of medical buildings and facilities, additions to medical buildings and facilities, and the payment of principal and interest on bonds issued to finance the cost of medical buildings and facilities as authorized by the provisions of chapter 263A . 4. The physicians and surgeons on the staff of the university of Iowa hospitals and clinics who care for patients provided for in this section may charge for the medical services provided under such rules, regulations, and plans approved by the state board of regents. However, a physician or surgeon who provides treatment or care for an expansion population member pursuant to chapter 249J shall only receive compensation for the treatment or care provided in accordance with section 249J.7 . ________________________________________________________________________
