Terms Used In U.S. Code > Title 18 > Part I > Chapter 109A - Sexual Abuse

• agency: includes any department, independent establishment, commission, administration, authority, board or bureau of the United States or any corporation in which the United States has a proprietary interest, unless the context shows that such term was intended to be used in a more limited sense. See 16 USC 7144
• association: when used in reference to a corporation, shall be deemed to embrace the words "successors and assigns of such company or association" in like manner as if these last-named words, or words of similar import, were expressed. See 1 USC 5
• department: means one of the executive departments enumerated in section 1 of Title 5, unless the context shows that such term was intended to describe the executive, legislative, or judicial branches of the government. See 16 USC 7144
• Federal law enforcement officer: has the meaning given the term in section 115. See 18 USC 2246
• individual: shall include every infant member of the species homo sapiens who is born alive at any stage of development. See 1 USC 8
• officer: includes any person authorized by law to perform the duties of the office. See 1 USC 1
• official detention: means &mdash. See 18 USC 2246
• prison: means a correctional, detention, or penal facility. See 18 USC 2246
• serious bodily injury: means bodily injury that involves a substantial risk of death, unconsciousness, extreme physical pain, protracted and obvious disfigurement, or protracted loss or impairment of the function of a bodily member, organ, or mental faculty. See 18 USC 2246
• sexual act: means &mdash. See 18 USC 2246
• sexual contact: means the intentional touching, either directly or through the clothing, of the genitalia, anus, groin, breast, inner thigh, or buttocks of any person with an intent to abuse, humiliate, harass, degrade, or arouse or gratify the sexual desire of any person. See 18 USC 2246
• special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States: as used in this title , includes:

  (1) The high seas, any other waters within the admiralty and maritime jurisdiction of the United States and out of the jurisdiction of any particular State, and any vessel belonging in whole or in part to the United States or any citizen thereof, or to any corporation created by or under the laws of the United States, or of any State, Territory, District, or possession thereof, when such vessel is within the admiralty and maritime jurisdiction of the United States and out of the jurisdiction of any particular State. • State: means a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or any other territory or possession of the United States. See 1 USC 7
• State: means a State of the United States, the District of Columbia, and any commonwealth, possession, or territory of the United States. See 18 USC 2246
• United States: as used in this title in a territorial sense, includes all places and waters, continental or insular, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, except the Canal Zone. See 16 USC 7143a
