- Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
- Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings.
- Board: means the Respiratory Care Board of California. See California Business and Professions Code 3704
- Department: means the Department of Food and Agriculture. See California Food and Agricultural Code 32
- Licensee: means any person authorized by a license, certificate, registration, or other means to engage in a business or profession regulated by this code or referred to in Sections 1000 and 3600. See California Business and Professions Code 23.8
- Oral argument: An opportunity for lawyers to summarize their position before the court and also to answer the judges' questions.
- Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
- Real estate investment trust: as used in this part means any unincorporated association or trust formed to engage in business and managed by, or under the direction of, one or more trustees for the benefit of the holders or owners (hereinafter in this part "shareowners") of transferable shares of beneficial interest in the trust estate (hereinafter in this part "shares") and that meets one of the following two tests:

- Respiratory care: includes "respiratory therapy" or "inhalation therapy" where those terms mean respiratory care. See California Business and Professions Code 3704
- State: means the State of California, unless applied to the different parts of the United States. See California Education Code 77
- Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
- Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
- trustees: means the Trustees of the California State University, created under Section 66600. See California Education Code 89000
