• Alternative education project: includes , but is not limited to, the use of video recordings, models, films, books, and computers, which would provide an alternate avenue for obtaining the knowledge, information, or experience required by the course of study in question. • Animal: means any living organism of the kingdom animalia, beings that typically differ from plants in capacity for spontaneous movement and rapid motor response to stimulation by a usually greater mobility with some degree of voluntary locomotor ability and by greater irritability commonly mediated through a more or less centralized nervous system, beings that are characterized by a requirement for complex organic nutrients including proteins or their constituents that are usually digested in an internal cavity before assimilation into the body proper, and beings that are distinguished from typical plants by lack of chlorophyll, by an inability to perform photosynthesis, by cells that lack cellulose walls, and by the frequent presence of discrete complex sense organs. • Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
• Authority: means the High-Speed Rail Authority created pursuant to §. See California Streets and Highways Code 2704.01
• Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. ^{Source: OCC}
• City: includes "city and county" and "incorporated town. See California Streets and Highways Code 15
• commission: means the California Transportation Commission. See California Streets and Highways Code 22
• Committee: means the High-Speed Passenger Train Finance Committee created pursuant to Section 2704. See California Streets and Highways Code 2704.01
• Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.

• Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
• County: includes "city and county. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 14
• County: includes "city and county. See California Streets and Highways Code 14
• custody: means the legal right to custody of the child unless that right is held jointly by two or more persons, in which case "custody" means the physical custody of the child by one of the persons sharing the right to custody. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 17.1
• department: means the State Department of Health Services. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 14062
• Department: means the Department of Transportation of this state. See California Streets and Highways Code 20
• director: means the State Director of Health Services. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 14061
• Director: means the director of the department. See California Streets and Highways Code 21
• Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
• Fund: means the High-Speed Passenger Train Bond Fund created pursuant to Section 2704. See California Streets and Highways Code 2704.01
• Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
• highway: includes bridges, culverts, curbs, drains, and all works incidental to highway construction, improvement, and maintenance. See California Streets and Highways Code 23
• Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
• Match: as used in this chapter , means to provide for the payment of the cost of any project to the extent that such cost is not to be reimbursed from federal funds. See California Streets and Highways Code 2413
• Medi-Cal: means the California Medical Assistance Program. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 14063
• Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
• Oversight: Committee review of the activities of a Federal agency or program.
• Person: means any person, firm, partnership, association, corporation, organization, limited liability company, or business trust. See California Streets and Highways Code 19
• Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.
• Pupil: means a person under 18 years of age who is matriculated in a course of instruction in an educational institution within the scope of Section 32255. See California Education Code 32255
• Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
• Spouse: includes "registered domestic partner" as required by §. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 12.2
• Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
• Transcript: A written, word-for-word record of what was said, either in a proceeding such as a trial or during some other conversation, as in a transcript of a hearing or oral deposition.
