• county: includes "city and county". See California Penal Code 7
• Defense attorney: Represent defendants in criminal matters.
• Discovery: Lawyers' examination, before trial, of facts and documents in possession of the opponents to help the lawyers prepare for trial.
• person: includes a corporation as well as a natural person. See California Penal Code 7
• Probable cause: A reasonable ground for belief that the offender violated a specific law.
• Public defender: Represent defendants who can't afford an attorney in criminal matters.
• remission: means a finding that the overt signs and symptoms of the severe mental health disorder are controlled either by psychotropic medication or psychosocial support. See California Penal Code 2962
• severe mental health disorder: means an illness, disease, or condition that substantially impairs the person's thought, perception of reality, emotional process, or judgment. See California Penal Code 2962
• state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the territories, and the words "United States" may include the district and territories. See California Penal Code 7
• Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
• Verdict: The decision of a petit jury or a judge.
