  • Agricultural composting operation: means composting that takes place on a farm. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 14 Sec. 3102
  • Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
  • Composting: means the controlled aerobic decomposition of organic materials to produce a soil-like product beneficial to plant growth and suitable for agronomic use. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 14 Sec. 3102
  • Counterclaim: A claim that a defendant makes against a plaintiff.
  • Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
  • Farm: means the land, plants, animals, buildings, structures, ponds and machinery used in the commercial production of agricultural products. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 14 Sec. 3102
  • Farm operation: means a condition or activity that occurs on a farm in connection with the commercial production of agricultural products and includes, but is not limited to, operations giving rise to noise, odors, dust, insects and fumes; operation of machinery and irrigation pumps; disposal of manure; agricultural support services; and the employment and use of labor. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 14 Sec. 3102
  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • Municipality: includes cities, towns and plantations, except that "municipality" does not include plantations in Title 10, chapter 110, subchapter IV; or Title 30-A, Part 2. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 15 Sec. 225
  • Oath: includes an affirmation, when affirmation is allowed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 15 Sec. 225
  • Plaintiff: The person who files the complaint in a civil lawsuit.
  • Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system.
  • Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.
