• Adult: means an individual who has attained 18 years of age. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 18-C Sec. 5-602
• Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
• Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
• Comprehensive plan: means zoning or a plan of development, including any amendment thereto, prepared or adopted by the planning board. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 36 Sec. 1102
• Conservator: means a person appointed by the court to administer the property of an adult, including a person appointed under Part 4. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 18-C Sec. 5-602
• Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
• Ex officio: Literally, by virtue of one's office.
• Fair market value: The price at which an asset would change hands in a transaction between a willing, informed buyer and a willing, informed seller.
• Farmland: means any tract or tracts of land, including woodland and wasteland, of at least 5 contiguous acres on which farming or agricultural activities have contributed to a gross annual farming income of at least $2,000 per year from the sales value of agricultural products as defined in Title 7, section 152, subsection 2 in one of the 2, or 3 of the 5, calendar years preceding the date of application for classification. • Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
• Guardian: means a person appointed by the court to make decisions regarding the person of an adult, including a person appointed under Part 3. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 18-C Sec. 5-602
• Guardianship proceeding: means a judicial proceeding in which an order for the appointment of a guardian is sought or has been issued. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 18-C Sec. 5-602
• Individual subject to guardianship: means an adult for whom a guardian has been appointed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 18-C Sec. 5-602
• Interrogatories: Written questions asked by one party of an opposing party, who must answer them in writing under oath; a discovery device in a lawsuit.
• Municipality: shall include cities, towns and plantations. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 36 Sec. 501
• Notice: means written notification served personally, sent by certified mail or sent by first-class mail to the last known address of the person for whom the notification is intended. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 36 Sec. 111
• Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
• Open space land: means any area of land, including state wildlife and management areas, sanctuaries and preserves designated as such in Title 12, the preservation or restriction of the use of which provides a public benefit in any of the following areas:
