- Abandoned animal: means an animal that has been deserted by its owner or keeper, excluding animals that are part of a population control effort. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 3907
- accumulated contributions: includes as much of the employer's contribution in the Retirement Allowance Fund as is needed to reach 7. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001

- Adjourn: A motion to adjourn a legislative chamber or a committee, if passed, ends that day's session.
- Adjusted base minimum price: means the base minimum price plus any amounts established by the Maine Milk Commission to reflect the increased costs of production pursuant to section 2954, subsection 2, paragraph A. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 3152
- Administrative unit: means the organization certified by the federal Small Business Administration to administer the Small Business Development Center Program in this State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 13031
- Adult: means a person who has attained the age of 18 years. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
- Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
- Affirmed: In the practice of the appellate courts, the decree or order is declared valid and will stand as rendered in the lower court.
- Agency: means a branch office of a financial institution at which all or part of the business of the institution is conducted, but the records pertaining to such business are maintained at another office of the institution, and not at such agency office. - Allegation: something that someone says happened.
- Amortization: Paying off a loan by regular installments.
- an event the result of which is determined by chance: includes but is not limited to a shuffle of a deck of cards, a roll of a die or dice or a random drawing or generation of an object that may include, but is not limited to, a card, a die, a number or simulations of any of these. - Ancillary obligation: means the obligation of the bond bank in connection with liquor operation revenue bonds issued under this subchapter under any of the following entered into by the bond bank:

Antibody to HIV: means the specific immunoglobulin produced by the body's immune system in response to HIV. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001Earnings: means compensation paid or payable for personal services, whether denominated as wages, salary, commission, bonus or otherwise, and specifically includes periodic payments pursuant to pension or retirement programs, or insurance policies of any type, and all gain derived from capital, from labor or from both combined, including profit gained through sale or conversion of capital assets, and unemployment compensation benefits and workers' compensation benefits. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2101 Election official: means a warden, ward clerk, deputy warden or election clerk. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 1 Election year: means the calendar year within which a particular election is held. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 1 Electoral division: means an area set off for election purposes. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 1 Electronic: means relating to technology having electrical, digital, magnetic, wireless, optical, electromagnetic or similar capabilities. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1902 Electronic signature: means an electronic symbol, sound or process attached to or logically associated with a record and executed or adopted by an individual with the intent to sign the record. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1902 Electronic video machine: means a machine, however operated, that has a video screen featuring an electronically simulated game and delivers or entitles the person playing or operating it to receive the privilege of playing the electronic video machine without charge, but does not deliver or entitle the person playing or operating the electronic video machine to receive cash, premiums, merchandise, tickets or something of value other than the privilege of playing the electronic video machine without charge. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 17 Sec. 1831 Eligible marketing cooperative: means an association of milk producers organized to negotiate producer prices higher than the minimum producer prices established pursuant to the northeast marketing area milk marketing order and that the commissioner has determined will not, through its operation, evade, impair or undermine the purposes of this chapter. A. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001employee: includes an officer of a political subdivision of the State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 19002 employer of the person exposed: include a self-employed person who is exposed to the potentially infectious blood or other body fluids of another person. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 19201 employment: means any service performed by an employee in the employ of any political subdivision of the State, for such employer, except service which in the absence of an agreement entered into under this chapter would constitute "employment" as defined in the Social Security Act; or service which under the Social Security Act may not be included in an agreement between the State and the Federal Security Administrator entered into under this chapter. Executive body: means the official or body of officials who, in their official capacity, have the general powers and duties of administering, supervising and managing the affairs of an organization or governmental unit. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001 Executor: A male person named in a will to carry out the decedent Extension of credit: means any acts incident to the evaluation of an application for credit and the granting of credit. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 4597 facility: includes a pharmacy licensed pursuant to Title 32. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 19201 fair: means a nonprofit agricultural fair society eligible for a stipend under Title 7, chapter 4. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 17 Sec. 1831 Fair market value: The price at which an asset would change hands in a transaction between a willing, informed buyer and a willing, informed seller. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation: A government corporation that insures the deposits of all national and state banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System. Source: OCC Federal Government: means the United States of America or any agency or instrumentality, corporate or otherwise, of the United States of America. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 30-A Sec. 2001 Federal Insurance Contributions Act: means the Federal Internal Revenue Code, chapter 9, subchapter A, as such Code has been and may from time to time be amended. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 19002 Federal Security Administrator: includes any individual to whom the Federal Security Administrator has delegated any of his functions under the Social Security Act with respect to coverage under such Act of employees of states and their political subdivisions. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 19002 Fee simple: Absolute title to property with no limitations or restrictions regarding the person who may inherit it. Feral cat: means a cat without owner identification of any kind that consistently exhibits extreme fear in the presence of people. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 3907 Finance charge: The total cost of credit a customer must pay on a consumer loan, including interest. The Truth in Lending Act requires disclosure of the finance charge. Source: OCC Financial institution: means a universal bank or limited purpose bank organized under the provisions of this Title, and a trust company, nondepository trust company, savings bank, industrial bank or savings and loan association organized under the prior laws of this State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131 Financial institution holding company: means any company which is deemed to be a holding company pursuant to the provisions contained in chapter 101. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131 Financing costs: means all costs of issuance, capitalized interest, capitalized operating expenses and debt service reserves, fees and costs of any ancillary obligation or other fees, expenses and costs related to issuing, securing and marketing liquor operation revenue bonds. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 17 Sec. 1831Game of skill: means any game, contest, scheme or device in which a person stakes or risks something of value for the opportunity to win something of value and that is not a game of chance. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 17 Sec. 1831 Garnishment: Generally, garnishment is a court proceeding in which a creditor asks a court to order a third party who owes money to the debtor or otherwise holds assets belonging to the debtor to turn over to the creditor any of the debtor General election: means the regular election of state and county officials occurring biennially in November. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 1 General fund: means the fund created or established as provided in section 6007. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 30-A Sec. 5903 Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value. Guide: means a person who receives any form of remuneration for that person's services in accompanying or assisting a person in the fields or forests or on the waters or ice within the jurisdiction of the State while hunting, fishing, trapping, boating, snowmobiling, using an all-terrain vehicle or camping at a primitive camping area. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Health care provider: means any appropriately licensed, certified or registered provider of mental or physical health care, either in the public or private sector or any business establishment providing health care services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 19201 Health care setting: means any location where there is provision of preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitative, maintenance or palliative care, services, procedures or counseling, including emergency services performed in the field, and appropriate assistance with disease or symptom management and maintenance that affects an individual's physical, mental or behavioral condition, including the process of banking blood, sperm, organs or any other tissue. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 19201 heat-treated: means processed by heating every particle of milk to a temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 30 minutes. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 2900 Hemp: includes agricultural commodities and products derived from hemp and topical or ingestible consumer products, including food, food additives and food products derived from hemp, which in their final forms contain a delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 2231 High-hand competition: means a game of chance conducted during a tournament game in which the winner is the person who plays the highest hand of cards, according to the rules of the tournament, during the tournament game. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 30-A Sec. 3752 His: as used in this Title , means "his or her;" while "he" means "he or she. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131 HIV: means the human immunodeficiency virus, identified as the causative agent of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 19201 HIV antigen: means the specific immune-recognizable marker proteins of HIV. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 19201 HIV infection: means the state wherein HIV has invaded the body and is being actively harbored by the body. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 2900 Milk plant: means any place, premises or establishment where milk or milk products are collected, handled, processed, stored, pasteurized, aseptically processed, bottled or otherwise prepared for distribution. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 2900 Milk producer: means any person who operates a dairy farm and provides, sells or offers milk or milk products for sale. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 2900 Milk products: means cream, light cream, light whipping cream, heavy cream, heavy whipping cream, whipped cream, whipped light cream, sour cream, acidified sour cream, cultured sour cream, milk, butter, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, nonfat dry milk solids, half-and-half, sour half-and-half, acidified sour half-and-half, cultured sour half-and-half, concentrated milk and milk products, skim milk, reconstituted or recombined milk and milk products, low-fat milk, light milk, reduced fat milk, homogenized milk, frozen milk concentrate, eggnog, cultured milk, buttermilk, yogurt, cottage cheese, creamed cottage cheese, acidified milk, low-sodium milk, lactose-reduced milk, aseptically processed and packaged milk and milk products, milk with added safe and suitable microbial organisms and any other milk product, frozen dairy dessert or frozen dairy dessert mix, cheese or other product designated as a milk product by the commissioner that is made by the addition or subtraction of milkfat or addition of safe and suitable optional ingredients for protein, vitamin or mineral fortification. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131 Pet: means a dog, cat or other domesticated animal commonly kept as a companion, but does not include tamed animals that are ordinarily considered wild animals or livestock. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 3907 Pet food supplier: means any retail location located in the State that sells feeding supplies for pets or livestock. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 3907 Pet shop: means a place or vehicle in or on which any dogs, cats, rodents, reptiles, fish, pet birds, exotic birds or exotic animals not born and raised on those premises are kept for the purpose of sale to the public. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 3907 Pick-up contributions: means member contributions to the retirement system which are assumed and paid by the employer through a reduction of members' salaries for services rendered, in accordance with the United States Internal Revenue Code, Section 414(h), in lieu of employee contributions. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001 Place: shall include municipalities, townships and any other unorganized area. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 36 Sec. 501 Plaintiff: The person who files the complaint in a civil lawsuit. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001 Service corporation: means a corporation, limited liability company or limited partnership substantially all the activities of which consist of originating, purchasing, selling and servicing loans and participation interests therein; or clerical, bookkeeping, accounting and statistical or similar functions related to a financial institution or real estate activities; or management, personnel, marketing or investment counseling related to a financial institution or real estate activities; or establishing or operating one or more satellite facilities; or any activity authorized by the superintendent by rule or order that has been authorized under federal law for service corporations owned or controlled by national banks, federally chartered savings and loan associations, federally chartered savings banks or federally chartered credit unions. Settlements often involve the payment of compensation by one party in satisfaction of the other party's claims. Sewage: means the water-carried wastes created in and carried or to be carried away from any structure together with any surface or ground water or household and industrial waste that is present. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 30-A Sec. 2001 Sewer system: includes both sewers and sewage disposal systems and all property, rights, easements and franchises relating to those sewers and sewage disposal systems. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802Support order: means a judgment, decree or order, whether temporary, final or subject to modification, issued by a court or an administrative agency of competent jurisdiction for the support and maintenance of a child, including a child who has attained the age of majority under the law of the issuing state, or a child and the parent with whom the child is living, that provides for monetary support, health care, arrearages or reimbursement and may include related costs and fees, interest and penalties, income withholding, attorney's fees and other relief. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Treasurer: means a person appointed by a candidate or a political committee to accept or disburse money to promote or defeat a candidate, party or principle. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 1 Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence. Tribunal: means a court, administrative agency or quasi-judicial entity authorized to establish, enforce or modify support orders or to determine parentage. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802 tribunal of this State: means the District Court or the Department of Health and Human Services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802 Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust. Uniform Commercial Code: A set of statutes enacted by the various states to provide consistency among the states' commercial laws. It includes negotiable instruments, sales, stock transfers, trust and warehouse receipts, and bills of lading. Source: OCC unit: means the bureau within the Department of Public Safety under Title 25, section 2902, subsection 12 or an authorized representative of the Gambling Control Unit. Verification on oath or affirmation: means a declaration made by an individual on oath or affirmation before a notarial officer that a statement in a record is true. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1902 Vertebrate: means a subphylum of chordate animals comprising those having a brain enclosed in a skull or cranium and a segmented spinal column, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 3907 Veto: The procedure established under the Constitution by which the President/Governor refuses to approve a bill or joint resolution and thus prevents its enactment into law. A regular veto occurs when the President/Governor returns the legislation to the house in which it originated. The President/Governor usually returns a vetoed bill with a message indicating his reasons for rejecting the measure. In Congress, the veto can be overridden only by a two-thirds vote in both the Senate and the House. Victim: means an individual who has been subject to domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 1 wages: means all remuneration for employment as defined, including the cash value of all remuneration paid in any medium other than cash, except that such term shall not include that part of such remuneration which, even if it were for "employment" within the meaning of the Federal Insurance Contributions Act, would not constitute "wages" within the meaning of that Act.
