Terms Used In Maryland Code, COURTS AND JUDICIAL PROCEEDINGS 10-4A-01

  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • Person: includes an individual, receiver, trustee, guardian, personal representative, fiduciary, representative of any kind, corporation, partnership, business trust, statutory trust, limited liability company, firm, association, or other nongovernmental entity. See
(a) In this subtitle the following words have the meanings indicated.

(b) The following words have the meanings stated in § 10-401 of this title:

(1) Aggrieved person;

(2) Aural transfer;

(3) Communications common carrier;

(4) Contents;

(5) Electronic communication;

(6) Electronic communication service;

(7) Electronic communications system;

(8) Electronic, mechanical, or other device;

(9) Electronic storage;

(10) Intercept;

(11) Investigative or law enforcement officer;

(12) Judge of competent jurisdiction;

(13) Oral communication;

(14) Person;

(15) Readily accessible to the general public;

(16) User; and

(17) Wire communication.

(c) “Remote computing service” means the provision to the public of computer storage or processing services by means of an electronic communications system.
