• Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
• Award: means a grant of money by the commission to an eligible student for educational expenses. See Nebraska Statutes 85-1903
• Award year: means the period beginning on July 1 through the following June 30. See Nebraska Statutes 85-1904
• Commission: means the Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education. See Nebraska Statutes 85-1905
• Eligible postsecondary educational institution: means a public or private postsecondary educational institution:

  (a) Located in Nebraska. See Nebraska Statutes 85-1906

• Eligible student: means an undergraduate student who:

  (1) Is enrolled in an eligible postsecondary educational institution. See Nebraska Statutes 85-1907

• Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
• Process: shall mean a summons, subpoena, or notice to appear issued out of a court in the course of judicial proceedings. See Nebraska Statutes 49-801
• State: when applied to different states of the United States shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories organized by Congress. See Nebraska Statutes 49-801
• Tuition and mandatory fees: means the lesser of the student costs for tuition and mandatory fees for a full-time, resident, undergraduate student for the last completed award year at the eligible postsecondary educational institution or the student costs for tuition and mandatory fees for a full-time, resident, undergraduate student for the last completed award year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. • Undergraduate student: means an individual who has not earned a first baccalaureate or professional degree and is enrolled in a postsecondary educational program which leads to, or is creditable toward, a first baccalaureate degree, associate degree, certificate, diploma, or equivalent. See Nebraska Statutes 85-1910
• United States: shall include territories, outlying possessions, and the District of Columbia. See Nebraska Statutes 49-801
• Year: shall mean calendar year. See Nebraska Statutes 49-801
