Terms Used In U.S. Code > Title 43 > Chapter 32 > Subchapter V - General Provisions

  • Active storage: means that amount of water in reservoir storage, exclusive of bank storage, which can be released through the existing reservoir outlet works. See 43 USC 1556
  • augmentation: when used herein with reference to water, means to increase the supply of the Colorado River or its tributaries by the introduction of water into the Colorado River system, which is in addition to the natural supply of the system. See 43 USC 1556
  • Colorado River Basin States: means the States of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. See 43 USC 1556
  • Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • Main stream: means the main stream of the Colorado River downstream from Lee Ferry within the United States, including the reservoirs thereon. See 43 USC 1556
  • officer: includes any person authorized by law to perform the duties of the office. See 1 USC 1
  • State: means a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or any other territory or possession of the United States. See 1 USC 7
