Terms Used In Alabama Code 45-27-60.08

  • Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.

The county medical examiner and assistant medical examiners of Escambia County, or any law enforcement officer having jurisdiction and the approval of the county medical examiner, shall take possession of personal effects on or about the dead body and notify the next of kin in regard to the death. The personal effects may either be retained as evidence if deemed necessary or be returned forthwith to the next of kin.
