- Entitlement: A Federal program or provision of law that requires payments to any person or unit of government that meets the eligibility criteria established by law. Entitlements constitute a binding obligation on the part of the Federal Government, and eligible recipients have legal recourse if the obligation is not fulfilled. Social Security and veterans' compensation and pensions are examples of entitlement programs.
- person: includes a corporation as well as a natural person. See Alabama Code 1-1-1
- state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the several territories of the United States. See Alabama Code 1-1-1
If any sheriff is eligible for retirement benefits under any other county, state, or municipal retirement plan or act, then, in that event, he or she shall elect the plan or act in which he or she desires to participate and shall so notify the proper authority within 60 days after he or she becomes eligible for any payments under this part. It is further provided, however, that such election shall not affect any person‘s entitlement to benefits under Articles 1 to 4, inclusive, of Chapter 21, Title 36.
