  • Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
  • Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
  • Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
  • Lien: A claim against real or personal property in satisfaction of a debt.
the defendant fails to answer within the time allowed by law, he is deemed to admit and adopt the allegations of the complaint. Otherwise, he must controvert such of the allegations of the complaint as he does not wish to be taken as admitted, and must set forth his estate or interest in the property, and if he claims a lien thereon, must state the date and character of the lien and the amount remaining due, and whether he has any additional security therefor, and if so, its nature and extent, and if he fails to disclose such additional security, he must be deemed to have waived his lien on the property to be partitioned.
