Terms Used In Illinois Compiled Statutes 55 ILCS 5/5-1001

  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • State: when applied to different parts of the United States, may be construed to include the District of Columbia and the several territories, and the words "United States" may be construed to include the said district and territories. See Illinois Compiled Statutes 5 ILCS 70/1.14
     Each county which has been, or may be established in this State, according to the laws thereof, shall be a body politic and corporate, by the name and style of “The county of ….,” and by that name may sue and be sued, plead and may be impleaded, defend and be defended against in any court having jurisdiction of the subject-matter, or other place where justice shall be administered.
