Conscience of health care provider; policy of the health care facility. A health care provider who because of personal views or beliefs or his or her conscience is unable to comply with the terms of a decision to forgo life-sustaining treatment shall, without undue delay, so notify the administration of the health care facility. The health care provider shall then assist the patient or surrogate in effectuating the timely transfer of the patient to another health care provider willing to comply with the wishes of the patient or the surrogate in accordance with this Act or, if necessary, arrange for the patient’s transfer to another facility designated by the patient or surrogate decision maker. If the policies of a health care facility preclude compliance with a decision to forgo life-sustaining treatment, the facility shall take all reasonable steps to assist the patient or surrogate in effectuating the timely transfer of the patient to a facility in which the decision can be carried out.
