The withholding or withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment from a patient in accordance with the provisions of this Act does not, for any purpose, constitute suicide or murder. The withholding or withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment from a patient in accordance with the provisions of this Act, however, shall not relieve any individual of responsibility for any criminal acts that may have caused the existence of the qualifying condition in the patient. Nothing in this Act shall be construed to condone, authorize, or approve mercy killing or assisted suicide.
