(a) Every owner of a motor vehicle, motorized bicycle, trailer or semitrailer intended to be operated upon any highway in this state, whether such owner is a resident of this state or another state, or such motor vehicle, motorized bicycle, trailer or semitrailer is based in this state or another state, before any such vehicle is operated in this state, shall apply for and obtain registration in this state under the provisions of Kan. Stat. Ann. §§ 8-126 to 8-149, inclusive, and amendments thereto, except as otherwise provided by law or by any interstate contract, agreement, arrangement or declaration made by the director of vehicles.

(b) Any truck or truck tractor bearing registration of a state other than Kansas which is engaged in intrastate movements within this state shall have Kansas registration, except such vehicles which are registered under the provisions of Kan. Stat. Ann. § 8-1,101 to 8-1,123, inclusive, and amendments thereto, and except such vehicles as are entitled to engage in intrastate movements within this state under any interstate contract, agreement, consent, arrangement or declaration made by the director of vehicles.

(c) Whenever any person has a current motorcycle, motorized bicycle, passenger vehicle, truck or truck tractor registration and license plate for a vehicle which has been sold, traded or otherwise disposed of not later than 60 days, inclusive of weekends and holidays, after acquiring another motorcycle, motorized bicycle, passenger vehicle, truck or truck tractor to which the registration and license plate will be transferred and such person has complied with all of the conditions precedent to the transfer of the registration except having the registration transferred in the office of the county treasurer, such person may operate the motorcycle, motorized bicycle, passenger vehicle, truck or truck tractor acquired for a period of not to exceed 60 days, inclusive of weekends and holidays, after acquiring the same and pending transferral of registration and license plate in the office of the county treasurer by displaying the motorcycle license plate on the motorcycle acquired, the motorized bicycle license plate on the motorized bicycle acquired, the passenger vehicle license plate on the passenger vehicle acquired, or the truck or truck tractor license plate on the truck or truck tractor acquired. If the acquired vehicle is a new vehicle, such person also must carry and have in possession the assigned certificate of title or bill of sale when operating the acquired vehicle during such sixty-day period.

Terms Used In Kansas Statutes 8-127

  • Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
  • Highway: means every way or place of whatever nature open to the use of the public as a matter of right for the purpose of vehicular travel. See Kansas Statutes 8-126
  • Motor vehicle: means every vehicle, other than a motorized bicycle, electric-assisted bicycle or a motorized wheelchair, that is self-propelled. See Kansas Statutes 8-126
  • Motorcycle: means every motor vehicle, including autocycles, designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground, except an electric-assisted bicycle or any such vehicle as may be included within the term "tractor" as defined in this section. See Kansas Statutes 8-126
  • Motorized bicycle: means every device, other than an electric-assisted bicycle, having two tandem wheels or three wheels, that may be propelled by either human power or helper motor, or by both, and has:

    (1) A motor that produces not more than 3. See Kansas Statutes 8-126

  • Owner: means a person who holds the legal title of a vehicle, or in the event a vehicle is the subject of an agreement for the conditional sale thereof with the right of purchase upon performance of the conditions stated in the agreement and with an immediate right of possession vested in the conditional vendee or in the event a vehicle is subject to a lease of 30 days or more with an immediate right of possession vested in the lessee; or in the event a party having a security interest in a vehicle is entitled to possession, then such conditional vendee or lessee or secured party shall be deemed the owner for the purpose of this act.   • Passenger vehicle: means every motor vehicle, as defined in this section, that is designed primarily to carry 10 or fewer passengers, and is not used as a truck. See Kansas Statutes 8-126
  • Person: means every natural person, firm, partnership, association or corporation. See Kansas Statutes 8-126
  • Precedent: A court decision in an earlier case with facts and law similar to a dispute currently before a court. Precedent will ordinarily govern the decision of a later similar case, unless a party can show that it was wrongly decided or that it differed in some significant way.
  • Semitrailer: means every vehicle of the trailer type so designed and used in conjunction with a motor vehicle that some part of its own weight and that of its own load rests upon or is carried by another vehicle. See Kansas Statutes 8-126
  • State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the territories. See Kansas Statutes 77-201
  • Trailer: means every vehicle without motive power designed to carry property or passengers wholly on its own structure and to be drawn by a motor vehicle. See Kansas Statutes 8-126
  • Truck: means a motor vehicle that is used for the transportation or delivery of freight and merchandise or more than 10 passengers. See Kansas Statutes 8-126
  • Truck tractor: means every motor vehicle designed and used primarily for drawing other vehicles, and not so constructed as to carry a load other than a part of the weight of the vehicle or load so drawn. See Kansas Statutes 8-126
  • Vehicle: means every device in, upon or by which any person or property is or may be transported or drawn upon a public highway, excepting electric personal assistive mobility devices or devices moved by human power or used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks. See Kansas Statutes 8-126
