  • Adult: means a person who has attained the age of 18 years. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC
  • Catastrophic illness: means an unforeseen, prolonged and extended illness, medical condition or injury that will likely cause death or permanent disability as determined by a licensed physician whose determination must be in writing. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 3701
  • Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
  • Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
  • Dependent: A person dependent for support upon another.
  • Designated public benefit corporation: means a "public benefit corporation" as described in Title 13?B, section 1406, subsection 1, that does not employ or have on its board of directors any certified law enforcement officer and that has entered into an agreement with a law enforcement agency or law enforcement association as provided in section 3702?C.   • Domestic partner: means one of 2 unmarried adults who are domiciled together under long-term arrangements that evidence a commitment to remain responsible indefinitely for each other's welfare. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Eligible criminal conviction: means a conviction for a current or former Class E crime, except a conviction for a current or former Class E crime under Title 17?A, chapter 11. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 15 Sec. 2261
  • Escrow: Money given to a third party to be held for payment until certain conditions are met.
  • Ex officio: Literally, by virtue of one's office.
  • Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
  • Immediate family member: means a law enforcement officer's spouse, domestic partner, child or legal dependent. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 3701
  • in writing: include printing and other modes of making legible words. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • Law enforcement agency: means any state, county, municipality or other political unit within the territory belonging to the State or any department, agency or subdivision of any of the foregoing, or any corporation or other association carrying out the functions of government that employs law enforcement officers.   • Law enforcement association: means a corporation, partnership, unincorporated association or any other legal entity, including a benevolent association, whose members are primarily law enforcement officers. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 3701
  • Law enforcement officer: means any person who by virtue of public employment is vested by law with a duty to make arrests for crimes, whether that duty extends to all crimes or is limited to specific crimes. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 3701
  • Municipality: includes cities, towns and plantations, except that "municipality" does not include plantations in Title 10, chapter 110, subchapter IV; or Title 30?A, Part 2. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
  • Property: means any money, service, gift or anything of value, including a promise. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 3701
  • Sealed record: means the criminal history record information relating to a specific criminal conviction that a court has ordered to be sealed under section 2264. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 15 Sec. 2261
  • Solicit: means to request property. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 3701
  • Solicitation agent: includes , but is not limited to, a person or entity that receives or retains reimbursement for expenses related to soliciting. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 3701
  • Year: means a calendar year, unless otherwise expressed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
