Terms Used In Maine Revised Statutes Title 36 Sec. 506

  • Tax: means the total amount required to be paid, withheld and paid over or collected and paid over with respect to estimated or actual tax liability under this Title, any credit or reimbursement allowed or paid pursuant to this Title that is recoverable by the assessor and any amount assessed by the assessor pursuant to this Title, including any interest or penalties provided by law.   • Year: means a calendar year, unless otherwise expressed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
Municipalities at any properly called meeting may authorize their tax collectors or treasurers to accept prepayment of taxes not yet committed and to pay interest on these prepayments, if any is authorized, at a rate not exceeding 8% per year; municipalities are not obligated to authorize the payment of interest on taxes prepaid under this section. Any excess paid in over the amount finally committed must be repaid, with the interest due on the whole transaction, at the date that the tax finally committed is due and payable.
