- Accumulated contributions: means the sum of all the amounts credited to a member's individual account, together with regular interest thereon. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201
- Actuarial equivalent: means an amount of equal value when computed at the discount rate contained in actuarial assumptions adopted by the board of trustees. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201
- Administrative compliance order: means an administrative order that is issued by the commissioner against a public water system in violation of state drinking water laws, regulations or rules. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2601
- Administrative consent order: means an order issued by the commissioner pursuant to a bilateral agreement between the commissioner and a public water system in violation of state drinking water laws, regulations or rules. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2601
- Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
- Amortization: Paying off a loan by regular installments.
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization

Continuance: Putting off of a hearing ot trial until a later time. Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed. Creditable service: means membership service and prior service as a judge which is credited towards retirement in accordance with subchapter IV. Dealer: shall mean any person engaged in the business of dealing in, selling, buying, exchanging or trading in weighing or measuring devices in this State;

Social Security and veterans' compensation and pensions are examples of entitlement programs. Equitable: Pertaining to civil suits in "equity" rather than in "law." In English legal history, the courts of "law" could order the payment of damages and could afford no other remedy. See damages. A separate court of "equity" could order someone to do something or to cease to do something. See, e.g., injunction. In American jurisprudence, the federal courts have both legal and equitable power, but the distinction is still an important one. Federal manufactured home construction and safety standard: means the standard for the construction, design and performance of a manufactured home that meets the needs of the public including the need for quality, durability and safety and that has been duly adopted by the Federal Government pursuant to the National Manufactured Housing Construction and Safety Standards Act of 1974, as amended by the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000, 42 United States Code § 5401, et seq. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Forgery: The fraudulent signing or alteration of another's name to an instrument such as a deed, mortgage, or check. Inspection agency: means an approved person or organization, public or private, determined by the board to be qualified by reason of facilities, personnel and demonstrated ability and independence of judgment to provide for inspection and approval of the design, construction or installation of manufactured housing in compliance with the standards and the rules adopted in accordance with this Act. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Irrevocable trust: A trust arrangement that cannot be revoked, rescinded, or repealed by the grantor. Judge: means a Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court or the Superior Court, any Judge of the District Court, any Administrative Court Judge or any Associate Administrative Court Judge who is actively serving as of December 1, 1984, or who is appointed subsequent to December 1, 1984, but does not include Active Retired Judges. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Mechanic: means an individual engaged in the installation or servicing of HUD-code or pre-HUD-code homes. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Member: means a judge who is included in the membership of the Maine Judicial Retirement System as provided in section 1301. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Membership service: means service rendered while a member of the Maine Judicial Retirement System for which credit is allowed under section 1302. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Multiple community water district: means that area comprising all municipalities served in whole or part by a single public water system plus those public water system zones within multiservice municipalities served by the same public water system. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2651-A Multiple community water system district-wide election: means an election held in each municipality within a multiple community water district to determine whether or not to fluoridate the water supply of that system. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2660-B Notice of noncompliance: means a formal written complaint or a notice of violation of state drinking water laws, regulations or rules. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2601 Oath: includes an affirmation, when affirmation is allowed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72 Oath: A promise to tell the truth. Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period. Operator: means an individual either employed or retained by a public water system who, as part of the individual's job duties, is assigned the responsibilities for operational activities that will have a direct impact on the quality or quantity of water provided to consumers. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2601 Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses. Person: means any individual, partnership, company, public or private corporation, political subdivision or agency of the State, department, agency or instrumentality of the United States or any other legal entity.
