- state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories belonging to the United States; and the words "United States" shall be construed to include the district and territories. The state treasurer shall have power to appoint a cashier, a bookkeeper, an assistant bookkeeper, a chief clerk and a securities clerk, who shall each perform such respective duties as the state treasurer may direct and require and who shall receive such salaries as shall be fixed by the state legislature. Said salaries shall be paid out of the general fund in the state treasury in the same manner as are the salaries of other employes of the state.
