  • Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
  • petition: when used in connection with the equity jurisdiction of the superior court, and referring to a document filed with the court, shall mean complaint, and "petitioner" shall mean plaintiff. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:51
If the parties interested cannot agree upon the amount to be paid for the damages caused by doing any of the acts aforesaid either of them may petition the superior court for the county in which the land entered upon is situate for an assessment of the damages, and the court shall thereupon assess them by a jury or other method, as the parties may agree.
