Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 19:32-22

  • Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
  • person: includes corporations, companies, associations, societies, firms, partnerships and joint stock companies as well as individuals, unless restricted by the context to an individual as distinguished from a corporate entity or specifically restricted to one or some of the above enumerated synonyms and, when used to designate the owner of property which may be the subject of an offense, includes this State, the United States, any other State of the United States as defined infra and any foreign country or government lawfully owning or possessing property within this State.   • Superintendent: means the superintendent of elections in counties wherein the same shall have been appointed. See New Jersey Statutes 19:1-1
The superintendent and his chief deputy and assistants are hereby authorized and empowered and without warrant, to arrest any person violating any provision of this title.

The superintendent and his chief deputy and assistants, as the case may be, shall have the right and power to call upon any constable, police officer or other peace officer to aid in taking any person so arrested to the nearest police station in the municipality in which the arrest is made, and such constable, police officer or other peace officer shall render such aid.

Any constable, police officer or other peace officer failing to comply with such request shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.
