Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 54:4-29

  • assessor: when used in relation to the assessment of taxes or water rents or other public assessments, includes all officers, boards or commissions charged with the duty of making such assessments, unless a particular officer, board or commission is specified. See New Jersey Statutes 1:1-2
  • Deed: The legal instrument used to transfer title in real property from one person to another.
  • Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
In all taxing districts, whether assessment maps have been adopted or not, when a change of ownership of real estate occurs, the new owner may present his deed or other evidence of title to the assessor or other proper custodian of the assessment maps, if any there be. Such officer shall properly note and record on the books and maps, if any, the proper change of ownership, and shall certify that he has done so upon the deed or other instrument of transfer.
