  • Common law: The legal system that originated in England and is now in use in the United States. It is based on judicial decisions rather than legislative action.

(a) This act shall be so applied and construed to effectuate its general purpose to make uniform the law with respect to the subject of this act among states enacting it.

(b) The rule that statutes in derogation of the common law are to be strictly construed shall have no application to this act.
