Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 53:2-2

  • Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
  • Attachment: A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.
  • Joint committee: Committees including membership from both houses of teh legislature. Joint committees are usually established with narrow jurisdictions and normally lack authority to report legislation.
  • Joint session: When both chambers of a legislature adopt a concurrent resolution to meet together.
  • State: extends to and includes any State, territory or possession of the United States, the District of Columbia and the Canal Zone. See New Jersey Statutes 1:1-2
  • Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
  • Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system.
The members of the state police, upon the request of the issuing body or the representatives of the issuing body, shall serve and execute, or assist in serving and executing, any summons, subpoena, warrant, commitment, attachment, order of arrest, or other process of any kind that may be issued by or by order of the senate, the general assembly, or by the senate and general assembly concurrently, jointly or in joint session, or by any committee of the senate or of the general assembly, or any joint committee of the senate and general assembly.
