Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 54:3-23

  • Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
  • person: includes corporations, companies, associations, societies, firms, partnerships and joint stock companies as well as individuals, unless restricted by the context to an individual as distinguished from a corporate entity or specifically restricted to one or some of the above enumerated synonyms and, when used to designate the owner of property which may be the subject of an offense, includes this State, the United States, any other State of the United States as defined infra and any foreign country or government lawfully owning or possessing property within this State.   • Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
54:3-23. In case of the failure of a person to obey any such order or subpoena of a county board of taxation, or to answer any inquiry properly put to him upon such examination, the person shall be punishable by the Superior Court in the same manner as such failure is punishable by that court in a case therein pending.
