Terms Used In North Carolina General Statutes 1D-20

  • claimant: includes any party seeking recovery of punitive damages. See North Carolina General Statutes 1D-5
  • Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
  • Statute: A law passed by a legislature.

A claimant must elect, prior to judgment, between punitive damages and any other remedy pursuant to another statute that provides for multiple damages. (1995, c. 514, s. 1.)
