(a) A distinctive license plate is authorized for any person who is a retired firefighter, if the person is currently a resident of this state, is otherwise qualified to register and license a motor vehicle pursuant to this title, and submits proof of former membership in a firefighting unit from which the person is a bona fide retired member in good standing.

  • Person: means a natural person, firm, copartnership, association, corporation, or an engaged ADS. See Tennessee Code 55-8-101
  • State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the several territories of the United States. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
  • Vehicle: means every device in, upon or by which any person or property is or may be transported or drawn upon a highway, excepting devices used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks. See Tennessee Code 55-8-101
(b) The registration plates must bear the legend “Retired Firefighter”.
(c) The registration plate must be issued upon payment of the regular registration fee pursuant to this chapter and an additional fee equal to the cost of actually designing and manufacturing the plates, and submission of information in accordance with subsection (d).
(d) For issuance of a license plate pursuant to this section, all applications must contain information that the commissioner requires proving the eligibility of the applicant as a person who retired in good standing as a firefighter pursuant to subsection (a).
