- Accelerator: means a program that supports entrepreneurs by providing training, business assistance and mentors in a time-limited training program. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 15301

See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2204Advertisement: means any material designed to create public interest in a product or induce the public to purchase, increase, modify, reinstate, borrow on, surrender, replace or retain a policy, as more specifically defined in the rules and operating procedures of the commission. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2473 Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths. Aircraft: means a machine or device designed for flight. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Allegation: something that someone says happened. Alternate payee: means a spouse, former spouse, child or other dependent of a member or retiree who is recognized by a domestic relations order as having a right to receive all or a portion of the benefits payable by the retirement system with respect to that member or retiree. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 13 Sec. 1101-AAnnual base compensation: means a member's gross compensation, based upon amounts reported by the member's employer on the member's previous year's federal wage and tax statement, that is used the first day of each April for setting the amount of coverage prior to retirement for participants in the group life insurance program administered by the board. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001 Annuity: A periodic (usually annual) payment of a fixed sum of money for either the life of the recipient or for a fixed number of years. A series of payments under a contract from an insurance company, a trust company, or an individual. Annuity payments are made at regular intervals over a period of more than one full year. Annuity issuer: means an insurer that has issued an insurance contract used to fund periodic payments under a structured settlement. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2241Applicant: means any person who seeks to contract for insurance coverage other than a person seeking group insurance that is not individually underwritten. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2204 Application for credit: means any communication, oral or written, by a person to a creditor requesting an extension of credit to that person or to any other person, and includes any procedure involving the renewal or alteration of credit privileges or the changing of the name of the person to whom credit is extended;

See Maine Revised Statutes Title 11 Sec. 7-1102 Carrying costs: means reasonable costs incurred for the maintenance, protection and security of a speculative industrial building prior to occupancy, including, but not limited to, insurance, taxes and interest. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 13120-B Caucus: From the Algonquian Indian language, a caucus meant "to meet together." An informal organization of members of the legislature that exists to discuss issues of mutual concern and possibly to perform legislative research and policy planning for its members. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001 Retirement allowance: means the retirement payments to which a member is or may be entitled as provided in this Part. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001 Retirement benefit: means the same as retirement allowance. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001 Retirement system: means the Maine Public Employees Retirement System. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001 Risk assessment: means the risk assessment that a licensee is required to conduct under section 2264, subsection 3. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2263 River herring: means the species Alosa pseudoharengus, commonly called alewife, and Alosa aestivalis, commonly called blueback herring. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Rule: means a statement of general or particular applicability and future effect adopted by the commission, including a uniform standard developed pursuant to section 2478, designed to implement, interpret or prescribe law or policy or describing the organization, procedure or practice requirements of the commission, that has the force and effect of law in the compacting states. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2473 SBIR program: means the small business innovation research program enacted pursuant to the federal Small Business Innovation Development Act of 1982, Public Law 97-219, which provides funds to small businesses to conduct innovation research having commercial application. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 15301 Securities intermediary: means :
(i) A clearing corporation; or
(ii) A person, including a bank or broker, that in the ordinary course of its business maintains securities accounts for others and is acting in that capacity. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 11 Sec. 8-1102Security: except as otherwise provided in section 8?1103, means an obligation of an issuer or a share, participation or other interest in an issuer or in property or an enterprise of an issuer:
(i) That is represented by a security certificate in bearer or registered form or the transfer of which may be registered upon books maintained for that purpose by or on behalf of the issuer;
(ii) That is one of a class or series or by its terms is divisible into a class or series of shares, participations, interests or obligations; and
(iii) That:
(A) Is, or is of a type, dealt in or traded on securities exchanges or securities markets; or
(B) Is a medium for investment and by its terms expressly provides that it is a security governed by this Article. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 11 Sec. 8-1102Security certificate: means a certificate representing a security. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 11 Sec. 8-1102 Security entitlement: means the rights and property interest of an entitlement holder with respect to a financial asset specified in Part 5. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 11 Sec. 8-1102 Seine: means an ordinary commercial-type minnow seine, not exceeding 1,200 square feet, used vertically to enclose baitfish when its ends are brought together or drawn ashore. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Semiautonomous state agency: means an agency created by an act of the Legislature that is not a part of the Executive Department. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 1972 Service: means service as an employee for which compensation was paid. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001 Service credit: means credit received for creditable service as defined under subsection 10. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001 Service of process: The service of writs or summonses to the appropriate party. Set line: means a line extending into the water and rigged to catch fish that has one end secured to the shore or to a fixed or buoyant object and that is not personally attended. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Settled claim: means the original tort claim or workers' compensation claim resolved by a structured settlement. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2241 Settlement: Parties to a lawsuit resolve their difference without having a trial. Settlements often involve the payment of compensation by one party in satisfaction of the other party's claims. Shipper: means a person that enters into a contract of transportation with a carrier. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 11 Sec. 7-1102 Shopping center: means any building or facility containing 6 or more separate retail establishments that are planned, developed, owned or managed as a unit, with an off-street public parking area of not less than 2 acres. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 1671 Smoking: includes carrying or having in one's possession a lighted or heated cigarette, cigar or pipe or a lighted or heated tobacco or plant product intended for human consumption through inhalation whether natural or synthetic in any manner or in any form. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 1541 Snagging: means to fish by manipulating a hook or hooks in such a manner as to pierce or snag the fish in a part of the body other than the mouth. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Special study organization: means any board established or authorized by the Legislature to undertake a study of a particular subject and which is required to complete its study during the biennium of the Legislature which created it. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 12002 Species of special concern: means a species of fish or wildlife that is not an endangered species or a threatened species but meets criteria for being of special concern as established by the commissioner by rule under section 10105, subsection 19. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Speculative industrial building: means a building of flexible design and suitable for commercial use, for which the construction or carrying costs or both are financed through this subchapter for the purpose of creating new jobs in a municipality resulting from the sale or lease of the building. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 13120-B Sporting dogs: means sporting dogs as defined by the American Kennel Club, including pointers, retrievers, setters, spaniels, Vizslas, Weimaraners and wirehaired pointing griffons. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Spouse: means the person currently legally married to a member. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001 State: means any state, district or territory of the United States of America. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2473 State Development Office: means the Department of Economic and Community Development. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 13054 State employee: means any regular classified or unclassified officer or employee in a department, any employee of the Maine Community College System except those who make the election provided under Title 20?A, section 12722, any employee of the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf except as provided in Title 20?A, section 7407, subsection 3?A, any employee of the Maine Military Authority, any employee of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, any employee of the Maine Port Authority, any employee of the Efficiency Maine Trust who on June 30, 2009 is an employee of the Public Utilities Commission energy efficiency or renewable energy programs who elects to remain a state employee, any employee of the Efficiency Maine Trust who accepts employment with the Efficiency Maine Trust prior to July 1, 2010 who was a state employee immediately prior to accepting such employment who elects to remain a state employee and any employee transferred from the Division of Higher Education Services to the Finance Authority of Maine who elects to be treated as a state employee, but does not include:
A. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001Statute of limitations: A law that sets the time within which parties must take action to enforce their rights. Structured settlement: means an arrangement for periodic payment of damages for personal injuries established by settlement or judgment in resolution of a tort claim or for periodic payments in settlement of a workers' compensation claim. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2241 Structured settlement agreement: means the agreement, judgment, stipulation or release embodying the terms of a structured settlement, including the rights of the payee to receive periodic payments. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Sunrise: means the time computed and established for sunrise for Bangor, Maine, by the Nautical Almanac Office of the United States Naval Observatory, converted to the legal standard of time in force in this State on that day. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Sunset: means the time computed and established for sunset for Bangor, Maine, by the Nautical Almanac Office of the United States Naval Observatory, converted to the legal standard of time in force in this State on that day. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 15301 Terms of a structured settlement: means the terms of a structured settlement agreement, an annuity contract, any qualified assignment agreement and any order or approval of any court or responsible administrative authority or other government authority authorizing or approving the structured settlement. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2241 Tester of compressed air: means any organization, agency, individual, firm, partnership or corporation that is recognized by the department as qualified to inspect and test suppliers of compressed air. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 1582 Testify: Answer questions in court. Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries. Third-party filer: means an entity that submits a product filing to the commission on behalf of an insurer. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2473 Third-party service provider: means a person that is not a licensee and that contracts with a licensee to maintain, process or store or otherwise is permitted access to nonpublic information through its provision of services to the licensee. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 2241 Trap: means a device that is designed primarily to catch or hold wild animals, including, but not limited to, a foothold trap, a killer-type trap, a cage-type trap or a snare. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence. Tributary: means a brook, stream or river flowing directly or indirectly into a lake, pond or another brook, stream or river. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Troll: means to fish by trailing a line rigged to catch fish behind a watercraft being propelled by mechanical, wind or manual power. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Trust account: A general term that covers all types of accounts in a trust department, such as estates, guardianships, and agencies. Source: OCC Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust. Uncertificated security: means a security that is not represented by a certificate. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 11 Sec. 8-1102 Uniform Commercial Code: A set of statutes enacted by the various states to provide consistency among the states' commercial laws. It includes negotiable instruments, sales, stock transfers, trust and warehouse receipts, and bills of lading. Source: OCC Uniform standard: means a standard adopted by the commission for a product line, pursuant to section 2478, and includes all of the product requirements in aggregate. Upland game species: includes bobwhite quail, gray squirrel, porcupine, ring-necked pheasant, ruffed grouse, snowshoe hare, spruce grouse and woodchuck.
