A person shall not directly or through any other person advance or pay, or cause to be paid, any money or other valuable thing to or for the use of any other person, with the intent that it, or any part thereof, will be used for boarding, lodging, or maintaining a person at any place or domicile in any election precinct, ward, or district, with intent to secure the vote of that person or to induce that person to vote for any particular person or measure.

Any person violating this section is punishable by imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of § 1170 of the Penal Code for 16 months or two or three years.

Terms Used In California Elections Code 18524

  • Election: means any election including a primary that is provided for under this code. See California Elections Code 318
  • Measure: means any constitutional amendment or other proposition submitted to a popular vote at any election. See California Elections Code 329
  • Precinct: means a geographical area within a county that is made up of voters and is formed pursuant to Chapter 3 (commencing with Section 12200) of Division 12. See California Elections Code 338.6
