  • Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.
  • Probation officers: Screen applicants for pretrial release and monitor convicted offenders released under court supervision.
     All pretrial services agency personnel shall be full-time employees supervised by the director and, except for secretarial staff, subject to the hiring and training requirements established by the Supreme Court as provided in “An Act providing for a system of probation, for the appointment and compensation of probation officers, and authorizing the suspension of final judgment and the imposition of sentence upon persons found guilty of certain defined crimes and offenses, and legalizing their ultimate discharge without punishment”, approved June 10, 1911, as amended.
